📌Simhachalam Disaster: Wall Collapse During Darshan Line Turns Fatal!

What was meant to be a night of deep devotion and celebration turned into tragedy at the Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in Simhachalam, Visakhapatnam, in the early hours of April 30th. As thousands gathered for the annual Chandanotsavam festival, a wall adjacent to a queue line suddenly collapsed — leaving seven devotees dead, several injured, and an entire community in shock.

● It was around 2:30 AM. Devotees had lined up for the highly anticipated ‘Nijaroopa Darshan’ of Lord Narasimha — a rare, sacred viewing of the deity — after paying ₹300 for special access. Excitement and devotion filled the air. But no one could have predicted the disaster that was about to unfold.

● According to reports, the wall — recently constructed near a shopping complex on the path from Simhagiri Bus Stand — gave way without warning. Officials believe that the structure had been severely weakened by the previous night's heavy rain. State Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha, who arrived on-site soon after the collapse, explained that soaked soil and the pressure of the waiting crowd were likely to blame.

● Rescue operations were launched immediately by teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local authorities. In the midst of rubble and chaos, an eighth person was found alive and rushed to the hospital, currently fighting for their life.

The entire state is mourning. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed his grief and announced ₹25 lakh in compensation for the families of the deceased and ₹3 lakh for the injured. A special three-member committee has also been formed to investigate what led to the collapse and how such tragedies can be prevented in the future.

Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his condolences, tweeting:
“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the collapse of a wall in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon.”

This heartbreaking incident has cast a shadow over what is typically one of the most spiritually uplifting events in Andhra Pradesh’s religious calendar. It also raises critical questions about safety infrastructure, especially when managing huge crowds in sensitive, weather-impacted locations.

For now, Simhachalam mourns — a place of divine energy shaken by human loss.
